These boots are made for walking and that’s just what we'll do. Practical. Flat boots are practical. Not only because they don’t have a heel, we have plenty of alternatives in flat-shoe styles, but because a pair of knee-high flat boots will get you through any social graces or wild terrain with both your feet and style intact. It’s the thing you buy when you have your first real grown-up moment, it’s ironically the thing you never wanted to take off as a child (wellies, thank you Saint Laurent) for putting those back on our radar. And it’s the thing you want to wear when making any large life decisions, like signing a house mortgage or tasting wedding cake samples.
Black flat boots are what cooking with butter is to a three star Michelin chef – completely essential. Which is why we feel the need to discuss this season’s Francesco Russo. Taking his some forty years of experience (Costume National, Miu Miu and Saint Laurent), and refining classics to their most elegant essence. Feminine shapes that follow the line of the leg are investment pieces that pay off in compliments, which is why Francesco Russo over-the-knee boots are a blue chip decision.
Best friends forever
Flat boots for women have been styled in countless varieties on the runway but lately, with the prolific use of creative layering, we have noticed less leg exposure, with flat boots being slightly concealed under gowns and maxi skirts. For the street, we can imagine doing this look with soft, lightweight midi dresses, tough lace-up flat leather boots, cropped bomber jackets and feminine accessories like the range Gucci is currently showing. A nice balance of tough and pretty that can take you from day-to-night with ease.
Thigh-high flat boots are not going anywhere, which for the English amongst us is a valuable styling tool for every season except the peak of summer. Flat over-the-knee-boots by Gianvito Rossi, everybody's favourite, are classic stay-true companions for denim A-line skirts, skinny jeans and cool t-shirt (the basis for any good relationship). Brown flat boots such as those by Isabel Marant, become best friends who hang out comfortably with your entire social scene. Flat knee-high-boots by Acne Studios are a more elusive friendship group, the artistic ones that get you into the coolest clubs. Flat suede boots by Aquazzura have made our season buy list, because when you try them on, you feel a bit like Gisele Bündchen if she was to visit a music festival. We have already mentally styled them with a Valentino dress.
Lust vs. Love.
One of the many fab things about fashion is that this problem doesn't matter much. Our lust lists start at the beginning of each new season, and end when said items are owned and loved. Over-knee flat boots are now well and truly on the love list, as is Stella McCartney denim, Dolce & Gabbana shift dresses and Missoni bikinis. What's on your list, both lust and love? Women's flat boots usually make both categories in two different varieties, a few styles even make waiting lists. Some of us have gone as far as printing shopping lists in complex categories and hanging them behind their desks. For the rest of us less crazy, who spend all spare moments online shopping, Instagram has become a wonderful screenshot tool, to hunt down desirable items and frantically spend our evenings trying to purchase them. We have a great edit in our instashop to make the hunt a little more results-orientated. So whether it’s just a sturdy pair of flat black boots that go with everything, embellished, bedazzled or buckled because you just have to have it, or long, soft and elegant to wear with a gown for an event, just let the lust turn to love.
