Gerrit Thomas Rietveld's 1934 Zig Zag chair quickly gained iconic status as one of the first examples of a cantilevered solid wood chair. Cut from four flat pieces of cherry wood and aligned in a rhythmic arrangement that eschews the traditional legs-seat-back sequence, Rietveld's Z-shaped silhouette is masterfully executed by Cassina’s carpenters, who pay particular attention to the chair's dove-tail joints, as well as the application of an open-pore finish that highlights the veins of the brown wood on the chair's front and sides.
