HOW THE DESIGN EVOLVED OVER TIME
Over the years, bikinis have developed drastically. It was in 1913 that Carl Jantzen formulated the first two-piece woollen bathing suit to magnify the performance of women competing in the Olympics. However, the silhouette of the garment wasn't as we know it today, it was just a tight-fitting t-shirt and shorts.
At the turn of the 1930's, a sparse amount of women began wearing the style in the warmer months. But due to fabrics being limited at the time, the top and bottom of the initial design were split, meaning bare midriffs were revealed. It was then in 1946, the Parisian designer Jacques Heim modified this design and produced the 'Atome' which was known as the world's first bikini.
A year later Louis Réard launched a revised version, and during the 1950's figures such as Brigitte Bardot and Marilyn Monroe were seen in the designer's creations. By the 1960's, the style had officially entered the mainstream system. Nowadays, women's bikinis are available in a range of fits such as triangle, tankini and strapless.
CONQUER THE BIKINI TREND
Those who are jet-setting off to California for a surfing vacation, be sure to pack a sporty swimwear design. Look to the likes of Beth Richards who offers an array of bandeau cuts in a variation of bold and neutral tones. Dress one of the label's darker styles with a roomy tote for an eye-catching look.
If you're vacating a little closer to home in the likes of the French Riviera, then go with a retro 80's esthetic. Add a beach dress with a high-waisted Lisa Marie Fernandez design and cat-eyed sunglasses for an admirable turnout.
The palm-fringed beaches of Bali call for a playful crochet Missoni Mare bikini worn under a lightweight white cover-up. Be sure to finish the outfit with a straw hat for a tropical approved attire.
