Faux fur has outgrown its teen years and developed into a dashingly good-looking item for the forward thinking, fun-loving individual. Speaking of individuals, if it wasn't for passionate vegetarian trail-blazers like Stella McCartney, we wouldn't be having this very fashionable conversation. Our love of the season is a pastel pink faux fur gilet by Ms McCartney that is fluffing fabulous (we think the fur free fur tag on the back is pretty cool too).
An interesting happening we've noticed between faux and real is that real fur seems to have started mimicking the fun that faux fur has created. Dramatic silhouettes, playful colours, nostalgic details and tongue-in-cheek references are the cornerstone of new-gen faux fur. "What's your fur?” said the lady in the mink coat "Oh it’s just pink unicorn" said the lady in the Stella McCartney faux fur coat. Not just mystical creatures, Stella does simple faux fur jackets in more subdued colours like stone-grey hues that would easily assimilate into the daily jeans-and-tee routine for extra an fashion punch.
Faux Fur: imagination is the only limit
A rainbow faux fur cape, a faux fur bolero in flamingo pink, we say wear faux fur like you’re in Anna Dello Russo's mind (or closet) for a day. London designer Hannah Weiland of Shrimps is growing a fan base more like a Beatle than a crustacean. Ladies like Alexa Chung, Laura Bailey and Pixie Geldof are seen wearing her accessories and faux fur coats, just cementing her cool-girl credibility even more. Laura's seasonal sensibilities conjure up images of bored Beverly Hills housewives, 1940s English handy crafts, children's illustrations and a Wes Anderson film in the making. Practically speaking, a Dries Van Noten faux fur coat is the brightest way to warm up a cold winter’s day.
As the fuzzy fibres creep up in high fashion, so does the inspiration on how to wear them. Try faux fur vests over this season’s re-emergence of frills in delicate fabrics. Contrast it with tougher leather skirts, or distressed jeans for an exceptionally on-trend look. Create depth and texture to an all-black look by adding a black faux fur jacket or a black faux fur coat. A faux fur stole is a brilliant way to add some colour (and warmth) to an early spring look, and a ladylike accessory to match our love for pencil skirts and cashmere sweaters. Take notes from cult Slimane and wear sequins of gold or silver and cowboy boots with that faux fur jacket. What about experimenting with the silk slips and satin skirts trend for the new season? Channel that Hollywood starlet from the silver screen and add a faux fur wrap to the equation.
