Whether it’s luxe leather bikers or opulent double-breasted blazers, Balmain really does have the best jackets ever.
One after another, Olivier Rousteing’s Balmain “Army” of models walked the FW16 runway wearing monochromatic ensembles in pale shades of pastel blue, light lilac and powder pink for dramatic results. A prominent silhouette is high-rise skirts and trousers tempered with cropped sweaters, while the eveningwear looks feature robe-style cardigans worn over bodycon dresses for a glamorous look that doesn’t skimp on sex appeal. As you can expect from the French label, the outerwear is as envy-inducing as ever with suede-swathed jackets and cocoon coats – all finished with those shiny golden buttons for an iconic look.
Founder Pierre Balmain’s design vision was of femininity and opulence. His beautifully embroidered creations with nipped-in waists and longer, fuller skirt shapes were worn by icons ranging from Audrey Hepburn to Ava Gardner to Josephine Baker and Brigitte Bardot. Today, under the direction of hugely acclaimed Olivier Rousteing, Balmain’s decadent design codes are still intact, but infused with a rock’n’roll, even hip-hop attitude and muses such as Rihanna and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley among the unofficial brand ambassadors.
