Whether it’s luxe leather bikers or opulent double-breasted blazers, Balmain really does have the best jackets ever.
Founder Pierre Balmain’s design vision was of femininity and opulence. His beautifully embroidered creations with nipped-in waists and longer, fuller skirt shapes were worn by icons ranging from Audrey Hepburn to Ava Gardner to Josephine Baker and Brigitte Bardot. Today, under the direction of hugely acclaimed Olivier Rousteing, Balmain’s decadent design codes are still intact, but infused with a rock’n’roll, even hip-hop attitude and muses such as Rihanna and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley among the unofficial brand ambassadors.
All you needed to do to find the SS16 Balmain show in Paris was follow the flashes from the paparazzi’s cameras. Celebrated by a star-studded line-up and front row, Olivier Rousteing embraced the sensual, body-conscious aesthetic that the label is known for with panelled suede and figure-hugging jersey designs. The high-rise sand-hued suede trousers are a striking example. And as always, the jackets are to die for! Our personal favourites include the textured silk blazer and the denim jacket – both finished impeccably with oversized golden buttons for that signature military edge you can expect from Balmain.
